What is the “UMANG” app?

So, UMANG app is a government project which is expected to bring all government's services onto one platform.

Central, state and local services will shortly be ready on your fingers tips via UMANG. The app has been imagined to tap into India's smartphone growth. It is required to bring around 200 services on a single platform.

Everyone is taking a Smartphone and applying the internet on mobile. So we need to give services where the residents are,” a NeGD official told the media.

The app is produced by the Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology's National E-governance Division (NeGD).

The division is currently seeing for a partner company to expand and roll out the platform.

UMANG platform and mobile app, in extension to the services on-boarded by the platform, shall have functionalities to combine with mobile apps developed by different government departments individually. This is one of the big challenge the official added.

The application will begin with about some 50 services, and will give a total of 200 services by its 3rd year of development. A detailed proposal document hints to the probability of adding several third-party services as well.

Users will be ready to operate the services in 13 languages. For users without smartphones, these services will be free via SMS and a toll-free number.

How will UMANG help

UMANG platform and mobile app, in extension to the services on-boarded by the platform, will have some functions to combine with mobile apps produced by different government departments individually, reports the Quartz.

There are huge concerns over safety and privacy, taking into account the quantum of information the UMANG application is sitting on. NeGD's guidelines are fair in this regard. It restricts the visibility of each department or ministry only to its own data. A NeGD official told Quartz that It is not storing the data. It is just aggregating. It will connect to the back-end database of every department.
